Saint Francis Church
Holden, Massachusetts
In the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts
Mission Statement
We seek to be instruments of God’s peace, bearing witness to the love of God in Jesus Christ for all people—at home, in our local communities and beyond to the wider world.
Vision Statement
As baptized people, we are striving to grow into the full stature of Christ, to become people who more faithfully love and serve both God and our neighbor. Toward that end we are committed to common prayer, life-long Christian formation, hands-on outreach to those in need, and care for one another as we grow in faith.
Core Values
- We are an Episcopal Church, rooted in the ancient Anglican tradition and the contemporary Anglican Communion. Celebrating the richness and diversity of what that means for us, we are particularly committed to:
(a) reading, marking, learning, and inwardly digesting Holy Scripture, so that we are not only "hearers of the Word" but also "doers of the Word;"
(b) prayer -- in our daily lives, in small groups, and through corporate worship. While open to a variety of ways that deepen our life in Christ, we celebrate the rich, living tradition of the Book of Common Prayer as a proven way of forming and re-forming disciples of Jesus Christ, and particularly to Eucharist-centered worship where we meet the living Christ in community;
(c) using our reason and paying attention to our life-experience as places where the Holy Spirit guides us into all truth, helping us to discern God's call to us as individuals and as a community.
- Faith is a life-long journey. It is not certainty, but trust in God. We celebrate the fact that at any given time we are at different places in that journey.
- We take Christian formation seriously for every generation. We are especially committed to laying a strong foundation in church school and through our vital youth ministry program.
- Francis of Assisi had a special love for the poor and a desire to reach out especially to the most vulnerable. We are committed to mission and outreach, particularly in "hands-on" ways that strengthen relationships and transform lives. We long for all of our members to claim their role as missionaries.
- Francis of Assisi also is said to have challenged his friends to "preach the gospel at all times; when necessary to use words." Respecting the dignity of every human being, we seek to embody "good news" as a visible witness to all who come through our doors and for all whom we meet in our daily lives. We too are willing "to use words" to tell the story of God's love for all people.
- All of life is a gift from a gracious and loving God; we are called to be faithful stewards of the gifts entrusted to us. We want to more faithfully practice generosity with our time, talents, and treasure as a witness to God's abundant love and mercy in specific, practical ways that build up our parish community and the Body of Christ of which we are a part.
